Multiple Injured as In-Flight Disturbance Impacts Delta Aircraft Arriving in Sydney

Several people have been injured when a Delta Airlines flight from LA to Sydney, Australia was hit by rough air this past Friday.

The flight, numbered 41 "experienced a brief period of turbulence" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier informed. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.

Local paramedics reported they assessed five individuals, and transferred a trio to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that comprised spinal discomfort and migraines. The patients' ages spanned from their thirties and seventies.

The event represents the latest incident of aircraft being hit by turbulence, with aviation specialists pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.

There were 245 people and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the Delta spokesperson added, clarifying that the plane touched down "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

The NSW Ambulance Service said they received a call just a mere three minutes before the plane landed, and response teams were standing by on the runway.

The reasons turbulence is growing more common - and often stronger.

During the past year, two dozen individuals were injured when a Delta Airlines flight, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, experienced "significant" rough air just a couple of hours into the transoceanic journey, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

Recently, passengers and crew on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a terrifying brief five-second period of extreme instability. One passenger lost their life and many were hurt, as those without seatbelts lifted out of their seats and were slammed back.

Bumpy air is not uncommon during flights, and while instances of significant turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are remained quite uncommon.

Estimates show that there are an estimated five thousand cases of significant in-flight disturbance annually, out of a total of in excess of 35 million journeys that currently occur around the world.

Severe turbulence is described as when the up and down movements of a plane passing through disturbed air generate greater than a significant G-force on your body - a strong enough force to throw you from your seat if you were not fastened by a restraint.

As global warming modifies weather patterns, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become bumpier: warming trends and shifting wind patterns in the jet stream level are projected to boost the frequency and intensity of severe turbulence.
